Kendall Phills

“I live to give because giving is how I learned to love, lead, and heal.”

Kendall Phills is a philanthropist at heart who simply lives to give. After the tragic loss of her husband, NBA player Bobby Phills II, in 2000, she turned pain into purpose by founding The Phills Foundation to honor his legacy and support families in need.

For over 27 years, Kendall has served the Charlotte community through advocacy, service, and giving. Today, through the Live to Give initiative, she continues that work — one home, one heart, and one intentional act of kindness at a time.

His legacy lives on through this work.

Kendall Phills' Bio

Kendall Phills is a philanthropist at heart who simply lives to give. In 2000, she faced unimaginable loss when her high school sweetheart and the father of her children, Bobby Phills II, an NBA shooting guard, tragically passed away in a car accident. In the midst of her grief, Kendall turned her pain into purpose, founding the Phills Foundation to honor Bobby’s legacy and serve families in need.

She firmly believes that our greatest contributions are often born from our deepest pain, and it has been her faith in God that has sustained her through life’s most difficult moments. Her greatest inspiration comes from her adult children, Trey and Kerstie Phills, who continuously push and stretch her to become the best version of herself.

For over 27 years, Kendall has dedicated her life to uplifting the Charlotte community—extending her hands to those in need through acts of service, philanthropy, and advocacy. She has impacted countless lives as a motivational speaker, volunteer with multiple nonprofit organizations, and a licensed real estate broker, always striving to provide hope and stability for those facing hardship.

Through the Phills Foundation and its Live to Give initiative, Kendall continues to make a difference—one home, one heart, and one act of kindness at a time.

Bobby Phills II's Bio

Bobby Ray Phills II was more than an NBA athlete — he was a devoted husband, loving father, son, brother, and a man of deep integrity. His life reflected the highest standards of academic excellence, athletic discipline, and a heartfelt commitment to family and community.

Born on December 20, 1969, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Bobby’s early life was marked by quiet determination and an unshakable work ethic. He graduated cum laude from Southern University with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, and in his senior year, led the nation as the top 3-point shooter. A proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Bobby embodied the values of leadership, service, and scholarship.

Bobby was selected in the second round of the 1991 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, but his path to professional success was anything but easy. After being cut that December, he continued to chase his dream through the CBA with the Sioux Falls Skyforce. In 1992, the Cleveland Cavaliers saw what others had missed and signed him, launching a remarkable NBA career. In 1997, Bobby joined the Charlotte Hornets, where his defensive prowess and relentless drive on the court made him one of the league’s most respected defenders.

Off the court, Bobby was a gentle giant — deeply rooted in faith, love for his family, and a passion for giving back. He married his high school sweetheart, Kendall Watkins, in 1994, and together they raised three children: Brittany Dickson Clark, Bobby Ray Phills III, and Kerstie Rae Dawn. Known for his quiet strength and humility, Bobby devoted time to youth and children’s charities, leaving an imprint on every community he touched.

Tragically, on January 12, 2000, Bobby’s life was cut short in an automobile accident. The loss was devastating — not only to his family and fans but to the city of Charlotte and the entire NBA community. Yet, Bobby’s story didn’t end that day. His legacy lives on through his family, his foundation, and the countless lives he continues to inspire.

He was — and will always be — The Man. The Athlete. The Legacy.
